The Shore Temple on the Bay of Bengal was constructed in the 7th century during the rule of King Narsimha-Varman II Rajasimha (c. 690-728).The Shore temples is a temple complex consisting of two Siva temples and a carving of Anantasayana Vishnu. It is an historic monuments and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arjuna's Penance: A sculptured marvel at Mahabalipuram, often called "Arjuna's Penance", is an enormous relief made on two huge boulders. One of the biggest open-air rock canvases in the world, this bas-relief is 31m long and 9m high. The surface of the rock has detailed carvings, showing the most endearing and natural rendition of animals.
Five Rathas Five monolithic chariot temples dedicated to Hindu gods. The five rathas are Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Draupadhi Ratha and Nakul Sahadev Ratha. These are monolithic temples, each created in a different style, They are also known as the Pancha Pandava Rathas, and the fort of the rathas are supposed to have been scooped out of a single rock formation.
Tiger Cave: The Tiger Cave is 5Km away from Mamallapuram, at Saluvankuppam, This place is a favorite picnic spot. The cave is distinguished by the crown of carved tiger heads around the temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga.
Krishna Mandapapam: The Krishna Mandapam This is a 12 column cave temple. It has a natural figure of a cow being milked. There is a sculpture of Krishna holding up the Govardhan mountain to protect his people from Indra's flood, on the black wall, in side the Mandapam
Muttukadu An ideal place for water sports, Muttukadu is 21 km from Mahabalipuram. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has a boathouse here. Visitors can enjoy boating, canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing.
Kovalam Just 19 kilometres from Mahabalipuram is situated the picturesque beach resort of Covelong, a quiet fishing village with the remains of a fort. Facilities for windsurfing, swimming and water sports are available here. If you are in Mahabalipuram, don't miss out on a visit to this place.
Crocodile Bank The Crocodile bank is situated barely 1 km from our Resort on the Chennai-Mahabalipuram road. Set up by an American named Romulus Whitaker in 1976, the number of crocodiles in the bank grew in its first 15 years from just 15 to over 5,000. Located nearby is a snake farm where anti-venom is produced for treating snakebites.
Kanchipuram (66kms) West of Mamallapuram. This temple town was once the capital of the Pallava dynasty. The silk sarees produced here are renowned throughout the world.
Vedanthangal Located 53 km from Mahabalipuram, Vedanthangal is one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India. The sheer number of birds that visit this sanctuary is amazing.
